Pepper tree / Anacahuita (Schinus molle)



This is a tree that grows to between 5 and 18 meters tall. It is native to South America (molle comes from the Quechua word for the tree, molli). The upper branches of the tree tend to droop. The tree's pinnately compound leaves measure 10-30 cm long and are made up of 15 or more leaflets. Its small white flowers borne profusely in axillary clusters and the fruit is a small, leathery, pink/red, spherical drupe 5-8 mm diameter, carried in dense clusters of hundreds of berries which are sometimes used as a substitute for pepper in some typical meals.
Este es un árbol que crece entre 5 y 18 metros de altura. Es nativo de América del Sur (molle deriva de la palabra Quechua "arbol", molli). Las ramas superiores tienden a colgar. Sus hojas pinadas miden entre 10-30 cm. de largo y están compuestas por 15 o más pinas. Sus flores blancas se agrupan profusamente en racimos axilares mientras que su fruta es una drupa rojiza de 5-8 mm. de diámetro, la cual es a menudo el reemplazo de la pimienta en algunos platos típicos.
